The Institute’s focus is particularly on the following areas of skill shortage:
| Automotive | Manufacturing |
| Building & Construction | Metals & Engineering |

Following the highly successful inaugural Awards in 2007, The Institute will again recognise outstanding trade and skills teachers in 2008.
Within the industries above there are a number of sub categories with prizes of $5,000 to be awarded in each sub category. $3,000 will be given as a cash prize, and $2,000 will be available for the winner to use towards a nominated development project that will be of benefit to the winner, their profession and their industry area.
Industry will then chose 8 finalists from this pool. The Institutes’ appointed judges will then interview these 8 and award two highly commended honours and select the overall 2008 Australian Trades and Skills Trade Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced at the Australian Training Awards on 20th November in Darwin.
In addition, the person chosen as the 2008 Australian Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year will receive an additional
